And I know from my time living in Florida for most of my life, in hurricane seasons, these sort of bureaucratic deadlines get kind of lost in the mix when people's lives are upended. That deadline has been extended multiple times. PARKS: Now, Maui fire survivors have until Monday, December 11, to apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA. KEAHI: I'm over nine generations from Lahaina, and everyone in my family but one person, one family member, lost their home. She lost her home in Lahaina during the fire. It can be very painful to relive the fire in any capacity, and that's something Kukui has firsthand experience with. People have lost homes, jobs, even loved ones. But it's exactly that - a process, a grinding one, in part because of the sheer amount of paperwork involved but also because of the emotions it brings up. They are the gradual reopening of the residential areas and the efforts to find displaced residents affordable short-term housing. SUBIONO: So there's two issues that are getting the most attention right now. Where do things stand right now with the recovery process? Russell, I know you've spent a lot of time talking to people at the center of this disaster. PARKS: Well, and this latest episode looks at how the recovery effort is going and a lot of different complexities around that. But Maui was an opportunity to discuss these deeper issues as it was happening, thanks to the internet and social media, with an international audience, while the situation was still fresh in people's minds. In our previous episodes, we touched on situations that were important to us and we know would be important to many people here and would maybe shine the light on some things for people outside of our state. I imagine the fallout from the fire has put your show's theme of belonging into kind of a whole new light. And then on August 8, the fires begin, and you guys go on hiatus to report, like everyone from your station, on this disaster. And the idea behind the podcast is to look at all the complexities behind this idea of belonging in Hawaii, which is obviously a place that has a long history of colonization and of tourism. So before we get into talking about what Lahaina's recovery has been like, I want to start by asking about your podcast, This Is Our Hawaii, which launched a few months before the fires. Russell and the producer of the podcast, Savannah Harriman-Pote, join me now to share some of that reporting. Russell Subiono spoke to her back in October for Hawaii Public Radio's podcast, This Is Our Hawaii. She's the operations manager for Kako'o Maui, one of the resource hubs set up to help people navigate this process. KUKUI KEAHI: They come in flustered and stacks of papers and I don't know what I need. There was the initial chaos and heartbreak of the disaster, but now people are in the middle of a new nightmare - the recovery process. When you look down from the main road leading into Lahaina, all that's left are black burn marks, a singed silhouette of a historic town. It's been nearly four months since western Maui erupted into flames. The instant he goes down you will need to grab him so he can’t recover. Keep tabs on his health for the rest of the encounter. He is easy to find as he is the only guy wearing a shirt. Enemies will pick weapons up off the ground but not out of containers.Įventually you will spot your paycheck the Dust King. Store them inside when you get an opportunity, but wait until your mercs have moved in so you can get by safely. Instead, stay back and watch the fireworks.Īs the bandits drop, take their weapons. This will prevent them from becoming a threat when they get back up. A stray swing could easily cripple you or knock you out, and you will be lying on the floor until your mercs leave you for dead. No matter what happens now, do not engage in any combat yourself. As soon as the bandits notice you and start shouting, back off. At night all the bandits will head inside and it will be more difficult to take them all on at once. With luck, you will get in before nightfall. Pick the lock on the gate or break it down. Wait for them to finish and then keep moving. If they get into combat along the way, do not attempt to help them. You should have more than enough from the loot you have scavenged so far. You are (1) looking to hire some bodyguards. Head in to the Bar, find the group of mercenaries, and talk to the captain. You won’t be needing any of it soon, and you will want as much space as possible. With a couple iron plates, a few weapons, and the previously gathered sake in hand, you should now have more than enough loot to get the cats you need. Pick up the iron plates and the most valuable (white quality as opposed to grey) weapons. Most of the items scattered around here are not worth your time. Keep your eyes peeled for bandits and bone dogs along the way. Next, head out to the ruined Holy Nation outpost to the east. (It is worth noting that you can also sleep here for free.) Venturing Forth: Scavenging You will be most interested in the sake and the chewsticks. You may take them freely, as no one owns any of it now. There are only a few pieces of loot here. Look for the only undestroyed shack in town.Īlthough it is the only shack in good shape, this building is actually abandoned. Fortunately, the world of Kenshi is full of loot to scavenge if you know where to look.Īssuming you have selected the Wanderer start, you are now in The Hub. The usual routine of mining copper or searching for the leftovers of a fight can take a while and is not very exciting. The first thing you will need to do is scrape together the 2k cats needed to hire a squad of mercenaries. Other starts are perfectly viable, but any details or adjustments relating to other choices will not be covered. We begin with the classic Wanderer start. Here I will show you my personal favorite way to get a new character moving with a bounty hunter start.īeginning with the Wanderer start I will show you how to quickly gather enough resources to hire a squad of mercenaries and take down the Dust King for his 35k cats bounty along with all the loot from his tower, all in one day. There are several ways to give yourself a boost past this early, brutal stage. A gentle breeze will knock you out to be picked clean by the wildlife. The first few days of Kenshi can be the worst. Kenshi: A Guide to Building Your First Town.Tired of breaking your back mining copper for days on end just to keep from starving? Too proud to stoop to thievery? Willing to take a few risks? In this guide I will show you how to set yourself up in the world of Kenshi with 40-50k cats and a set of decent quality gear in only one day through the honorable profession of bounty hunting. by AnonymousĬMU Drama has BA and Ma programs. The Monty Clift project would have done better now than this because wouldn't have involved politics at all. (Add to that list anything involving a virus that kills the population is a no-no now.) While I'm sure this show will be good, it will be an uphill climb. Most people don't want political shows right now and are burned out on it as Ryan Murphy is finding out with his Monica Lewinsky series, but he wasn't the only one that has had a political series come out in 2020 or 2021 (so far) which either bombed or people forgot about. The Only Murders in the Building also comes to mind, which has its serious moments but it is also a lot of fun. If you want to get more serious then White Lotus and Hacks. While this film (or is it a miniseries?) may only be "in development" the subject matter in these political witch-hunty times couldn't be more pertinent and I'd bet it will get fast-tracked to production.Īctually, people want shows like Ted Lasso. While he is talented he doesn't often get the right material and I think that's why people think he's just an okay actor. He was good enough at singing and acting to get into CMU a few decades ago. I’m looking forward to watching the next seasons to see what changes they’ll make to keep the audience interested. The Carnegie Mellon drama school is hard to get into, you don't get in if you're not talented The dialogue is witty and moves the show along without needing any cliffhanger sentences that set up their commercial breaks.Īll-in-all the series offers a fresh take on an otherwise stale format. Despite the light and airy feel of the show, the dialogue is not a bunch of cheesy one-liners that one would expect. Neil constantly gets on Burke’s nerves, usually much to the mirth of the viewer. What else does it do well? It has romance, “bromance”, action, drama and it’s actually pretty funny. Where Neil is reckless and compulsive, Burke is calculated and careful. Burke working to slowly transform Neil’s mindset to that of a “good-guy” is a long-running story and character arc of the show. Neil has trouble seeing the point of working for the good guys, and constantly questions why Burke does what he does. Burke, a middle-aged family man has always worked on the right side of the law, but it demands all of his time and he gets little reward for his efforts. This adds a level of mystique to an already mystery-riddled show, where the FBIs unit is trying to capture criminals while keeping track of Neil at the same time.Īs with any good show, the characters mesh well. This aspect of White Collar helps it to stay fresh because unlike the typical cop drama, the main protagonist is neutral, and therefore his true motives are always a little bit of an unknown. His story was portrayed in Spielberg’s Catch Me if You Can (2002).) (Notorious young forger Frank Abagnale was given a similar deal to work for the FBI in the 1960s. There have been other cases of this happening, both in real life and in successful media adaptations. He is given an offer to commute his sentence if he works as a special consultant (albeit with a tracking anklet) under Burke to help him catch other criminals, which he has little choice but to accept. They begin their work together when Neil is going to be put back in jail after escaping, and is facing 20+ years there. He is caught by agent Peter Burke (Tim Dekay) the head of the FBI’s “White Collar” unit, a unit devoted to apprehending high-stakes criminals such as bank robbers, con-men, and art thieves, etc. The show stars Neil Caffery (Matt Bomer) as a young, charismatic con-man, forger, and thief. This obviously differs from the normal format. It’s not your typical cop/detective/”who-done-it” show largely because the main characters are on opposite sides of the law, and therefore not always working towards the same goal. There are too many of them.)īut what makes White Collar stand apart from the pack is that it takes the format, which is unarguably a successful one, picks the best parts from it, and combines it with aspects of a bank-robbery type of format. Law and Order, CSI, NCIS, Southland, In Plain Sight, Chicago Code, Hawaii 5-0, or any of their dozens of spinoffs and look-alikes. Don’t get me wrong, I dislike most of the cop dramas that plague the current TV landscape just as much as the next guy. In fact, at first glance it’s a show that doesn’t really align with my typical taste. Its tone is light and playful for the most part, something I haven’t really touched upon on any of my other posts. Jeff Eastin’s White Collar is a show that is just really fun to watch. Last Christmas I asked for a Chemex coffee maker. No regrets here! Minimalist Kitchen Tip #4: Opt for Simple Appliances I love having such a simple dishware set! I’m comfortable taking it in the car since it’s chip-resistant, yet I can still dress it up for formal dinners (like in my Thanksgiving tablescape). I decided to get rid of ALL OF IT (yes, ALL!), and switch to a simple white Correll dishware set. I had 3 sets of dishware in my kitchen: the “nice” stuff, the “eating at home” stuff, and the “eat in the car” stuff. Minimalist Kitchen Tip #3: Keep Your Dishware Simple Now, I know it’s weird for kitchen stuff to “bring you joy,” but if you have any sentimental items (a pie pan from your grandmother), feel free to keep it with one caveat: Try to actually use it or do something with it in the next 6 months. I talked more about my keeping-stuff-philosophy in my closet decluttering post, but I keep a similar mindset for kitchen stuff: If you haven’t used it in over a year and it doesn’t bring you joy, it needs to go. I’ll keep dishes and gadgets for years and never use them. I’m the worst when it comes to keeping kitchen stuff. Just try living in a less cluttered place and see if it helps! Minimalist Kitchen Tip #2: Re-Evaluate Your Essentials If it feels empty and you hate it, you can put it back at the end of the week. Those things don’t need to take up your precious counter space.įor one week, try taking all your decor off your kitchen countertops. For example, your toaster, mixer, blender, etc. Take a look at your kitchen and see what items you could put away in your cabinets or the pantry. I mean decor, storage containers, bins, appliances, etc. When I say stuff, I don’t mean like, the mail and dishes. I’ve discovered that the less stuff I keep on my countertops, the less likely they’ll get cluttered. Thanks!* Minimalist Kitchen Tip #1: Clear Off Your Countertops *This post contains a few affiliate links which help me keep this blog afloat through a small commission at no extra pennies for you. Yes, a few purchases have made a big difference, but I also want to talk about a couple key routines that have made all the difference. I’ve learned over these past months that having a minimalist kitchen isn’t necessarily about your possessions, but how you’re managing your kitchen. After we finished our kitchen renovation in July, I cleaned EVERYTHING and have been trying to maintain a more minimalist kitchen! I had no energy to clean anything and by 8 months postpartum, my house was a freaking train wreck. After having Griffin, my whole house became so cluttered. That is only the beginning, she also explains what trees can be tapped, and it’s not just maple trees!Īt this point I am loving this book, it is informative, well laid out and has warmth and humour to it. It is quite an intensive book, but does not feel like it. But with Michelle’s wit and humour she has explained all the ins and outs, and also included a list of supplies, suppliers. When I read this book it became quickly apparent that I know absolutely nothing about the process. Having access to suitable trees for tapping and extracting is only part of the process. She shares the area with her husband and children, as well as a dog, cows, chickens and other animals. With her family in a 14 acres wooded homestead in New England, Michelle tells how as a family they live with and within a beautiful area. Her failures in making maple syrup has given her a basis for this book, or, she refers to it as “being the heart of it”. Here is a lady who quite freely admits to making, and still making mistakes, but how she learns from each one and moves on. As I read this book I was amazed at how intricate, time-consuming this process is and all the factors that come into play, that can help or hinder the process.Īs I started reading this book, I was struck by the humble nature of the author. I have a bit of a background in the catering industry and had not put much thought into the process of extracting maple syrup. Now my curiosity got the better of me when I saw Michelle’s book “Sweet Maple”. You can read even more, watch some videos, peruse my lists of equipment we use and resources I love, and order my eBooks and eCourses all about backyard maple syrup at. In your hands you’re holding a book about my family’s failures (lots) and successes (a few) during our first two winters’ attempts to turn tree sap into amazing liquid-gold sweetness. For all the reasons above, and if you like the feel-good idea of supporting a hard-working momma who’s writing to help pay the homestead bills, then you’ll be glad you invested in this book. (Guess who first made maple sugar?) Or maybe you’d like a glimpse into our family’s efforts to live life a little more simply by raising a few farm animals and making our own allnatural sugar. (Not that I can relate to this, mind you.) Maybe your kid’s learning about Native Americans in school. Maybe you know you’re diving into it next winter, sink or swim, and you’d rather swim? Or maybe you have a curious child asking all kinds of questions about maple syrup. Prologue (taken from the book): Ever thought about trying to make your own maple syrup? Maybe you’re just curious about the whole process. And the new (and improved!) book will be on bookshelves fall 2019. This book is wonderful!) So now the version I got to review has been pulled. It was about to be released, self-published I should say, when suddenly Michelle had publishing houses swooning over this book and wanting to publish it themselves. Well, that’s not the whole story, really. I was given the privilege of reading a brand-new book titled Sweet Maple, written by Michelle Visser. This personal touch is what sets the game apart from its predecessors in my opinion. During the short road trip where you're exploring the highlighted area, you're introduced to a number of interesting aspects about family life in the country. For example, early on in the game, you're tasked with retrieving a Volkswagen Bettle that belonged to one of the organizer's grandfathers. However, my favorite has to be the Barn Finds.īarn Finds in Forza Horizon 5 tell personal stories that highlight Mexican culture. There are a number of other mechanics in Forza Horizon 5 like buying Houses that serve as start points, constructing Outposts that increase the scope of the Horizon Festival - the fictional car event at the heart of every Forza Horizon game - or finding collectibles that can unlock Fast Travel points or grant XP. Showcase events are rare because they're essentially bombastic races, that are given as rewards, for taking part in a substantial number of events in a particular biome. You race against planes to the finish line and do so much more. Lastly, Showcase events are by far the most spectacular because they're essentially Top Gear-like set pieces. Additionally, why are the organizer's belongings scattered across an abandoned airfield with a downed plane? Is this some Fast & Furious-like situation? It seems to me that a trained professional should be setting up devices near a volcano. The objective-based missions feel a little unrealistic, but they offer a somewhat compelling reason to, let's say, explore an active volcano because you're measuring seismic activity or retrieve one of the organizer's belongings in an abandoned airfield. The races vary from drives across the map to laps around a circuit. The game gives you a number of ways to earn cars including buying them with Credits, unlocking them through Wheel Spins - essentially like Wheel of Fortune, but you either win vehicles or Credits, or find them in Barns.Īs you drive around Mexico - and level up - you gain access to new races, objective-based missions, and Showcase events. You should be prepared to factor in weather conditions. Driving in the rain is quite a slippery affair compared to a sunny day. Choosing the right car for the right environment, or race, plays an important role in Forza Horizon 5. You should use a Ford Bronco or another all-wheel-drive vehicle for that. For example, using an Aston Martin DB11 in a muddy riverbed probably isn't a good idea. There are over 500 vehicles to collect, but you should have a couple of go-to machines. While you can take any car on your cross-country road trip, another major feature of the game is to build a car collection. You can drive anywhere - from active volcanoes to dense jungles - as you participate in various races and other events in different biomes. However, if you aren't, what you need to know is that Forza Horizon 5 is an open-world racing game that takes place in Mexico. It’s a nice, innovative touch to the Horizon formula that’s sure to excite players who wish to prolong their single-player campaign content and find new ways to engage races.įinally, Playground Games revealed the full achievement list for Forza Horizon 5 (which will be shared across Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC).If you've ever owned an Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S - or played one of the games on PC - you're probably familiar with the Forza Horizon formula.
